First Look: 2022 Honda Civic

Honda announced that its 11th- generation Civic, the 2022 Civic, will arrive in Canada in the early summer of this year and will sport a clean and modern design and an updated interior, and come equipped with a range of standard driver safety features.

Pricing for the 2022 Honda Civic will be made available closer to the official launch.

Since its introduction in Canada in 1973, the Civic has been a top seller for Honda Canada, and one of Canada bestselling vehicles. Over 2 million Civics have been sold, and the new 2022 Honda Civic is designed to build on that legacy.

“It will raise the bar in styling, performance and safety,” said Steve Hui, assistant vice-president, Honda sales and marketing with Honda Canada. “Everything about this new Civic is simply better, from the way is rides and handles to the quality and comfort of the interior and level of safety and advanced technologies. It is more sporty, technically advanced and sophisticated.”

Ryan Desa, product lead, Honda Product Planning with Honda Canada said that the design team was focused building upon what has attracted Canadians to the Civic, that is the Civic’s build quality, dependability, handling and comfort. “The development team was committed to improving on it, taking everything that is great with the Civic and taking it to the next level. The styling is more refined and sophisticated, and the interior is transformed with a clean, uncluttered look with improved visibility, ergonomics and the use of higher quality materials. This 11th generation Civic now offers more standard features than ever before, including several new ‘Civic First’ technologies.”

Coming in four trim levels – LX, EX, Sport and Touring – the 2022 Honda Civic will have sharpened exterior with an elongated hood and windshield pillars that will visually connect to the front wheel hub. This will give the 2022 Honda Civic a more planted look. A change from previous Civic designs are the now door-mounted side mirrors. Their new placement away from the pillar to the doors will remove blind spots and improve driver sightlines while maintaining the clean exterior lines of the 2020 Honda Civic. A shoulder character line will connect the front fender to the taillights. LED lighting will feature prominently on the exterior, such as the headlamps, daytime running lights, parking lights and available fog lights.

First Look 2022 Honda Civic Sedan

Eight exterior colours will be on offer, three of which Honda Canada said are new: Meteorite Gray Metallic, Sonic Gray Pearl and an exclusive Morning Mist Blue Metallic.

Jeff Mar, product specialist with Honda Canada pointed to several new interior enhancements some of which are a first for the Civic. He said the interior will be roomier with an uncluttered and more sophisticated design, with extensive use of high-quality materials throughout, especially on touchpoints.

Controls are made from premium materials that add a feeling of both practically and durability, and the centre console trim is made to hide fingerprints and smudges, adding to the premium interior appearance. In a Civic-first, drivers get an all-digital, full-colour instrument cluster that is customizable using controls located on the steering wheel. The centre of the instrument panel will display information from the 2022 Civic’s driver assistance features, such as the lane keeping assist and the adaptive cruise control, for example.

The LX, EX and Sport trims will sport a 7-inch LCD infotainment display that comes with physical power/volume and tuning/selection knobs. The infotainment systems support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Touring will go up a step and bring a 9-inch HD infotainment screen and wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Qi-compatible wireless charging. The Touring will also bring a 12-speaker Bose audio system.

First Look 2022 Honda Civic Sedan

First Look 2022 Honda Civic Sedan

Mar added that the 2022 Honda Civic will be fun to drive as, “the 2022 Honda Civic rides on a stiffer and more rigid chassis that makes the car more responsive and livelier, and more reactive to steering input. This car feels solid and smooth and comfortable.”

The 2022 Honda Civic will come with an enhanced Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver assistance technologies, adding Traffic Jam Assist and improvements to Honda’s Adaptive Cruise Control, Land Keeping Assist, and Blind Spot monitoring. In the Touring trim, drivers will have Cross Traffic Monitoring and Low-Speed Braking Control as well.

Standard in the LX, EX and Sport trims will be a 2.0-litre 4-cylider engine producing 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque while the Touring trim will come with a 1.5-litre turbo 4-cylinder that will produce 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Added to the Normal and Eco driving modes, the 2.0-litre Sport and 1.5-litre Touring will have a user-selectable Sport Mode that is accessible through the toggle switch located on the centre console.

Tires you can trust

Between airbags, anti-lock brakes, and even blind-spot monitoring, your car may be loaded with safety features. But even with all the latest technology, it’s your tires that remain the most important safety component on your vehicle.

After all, it’s your tires doing the hard work when you’re forced to brake quickly to avoid an obstacle, or navigate challenging weather. Most tires perform well in normal situations — but Canadians don’t always get ordinary road conditions.

Just like your shoes, it’s important to get tires that fit your car. Luckily, all the options are at your fingerprints when you shop for tires online. If you’re looking for the most trusted tires from the top brands in 2021, take a look at these dependable models:

Michelin

Michelin is recognized as one of the top tire brands in the world, with high-performance tires to take on any road challenge.

The Defender T + H is the brand’s longest-wearing passenger tire, offering a 130,000 km manufacturer’s warranty so you can feel confident on your wheels for the long haul. The model, suitable for cars and minivans, is all-season safe, eco-friendly and constructed to maximize tread life.

The Pilot Sport 4S is the brand’s top max performance tire. Constructed to deliver the best grip in dry and wet conditions, the model is Michelin’s number one tire in dry and wet braking.

Bridgestone

The Potenza RE980AS is Bridgestone’s flagship model, engineered for premium sports cars and sedans. The ultra high-performance tire delivers the best handling year round — you can feel at ease even in light snow.

But if you really want to conquer the cold, Bridgestone’s Blizzak line offers the most dependable winter performance. The studless tread design provides the best handling even in layers of snow and slush, and reliable stopping power on ice. There are several Blizzak winter tires variations to choose from, including performance and light truck/SUV models.

Continental

The PureContact LS is Continental’s Grand Touring all-season tire developed for sedans, coupes, minivans and small crossovers, providing a reliable drive with responsive handling and a sporty steering feel. It’s designed to grip the road in dry, wet and wintry conditions, including light snow.

The ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus is a premium, ultra-high performance all-season tire that also delivers a balanced grip, with solid dry and wet braking that also handles well in light snow. Both tires feature quick view indicators in the tread that show your tires level of performance, so you can see with your eyes when it’s no longer at its peak.

Pirelli

The P4 Four Seasons Plus model features variable angle grooves for a mechanical grip and improved steering, especially in wet weather. The all season tire is engineered for exceptional mileage and designed especially for coupes, sedans, and minivans.

The Cinturato P7 All Season Plus II is Pirelli’s enhanced Touring all-season tire developed for premium and touring sedans and coupes. The model offers predictable handling and traction, and the updated tread compound delivers enhanced capabilities in wet conditions.

Toyo Tires

The Extensa A/S II, suited for passenger cars all the way to light trucks, is Toyo’s is designed for all-season performance and priced to fit any budget. The special silica compound delivers better wet performance and improves fuel efficiency.

Need some dependable wheels to take off road? Toyo’s Open Country All Terrain III is developed for pickup trucks, Jeeps, crossovers and SUVs with excellent off-road grip and responsive on-road handling. An all-season, cut-and-chip resistant tread compound is engineered to enhance off-road traction, while maintaining a comfortable and quiet on-road ride.

Volvo Announces Green Energy for Canada HQ, Part of Global Sustainability Effort

Volvo Cars has been announcing great strides to help turn its business greener including electrifying more of its models, working to clean up supply chains, and even using old fishing nets to make vehicle carpeting. The latest announcement is a little more local: Volvo Cars Canada is making its head office powered by 100 per cent renewable energy.

The automaker plans to power its Canadian office using electricity provided by Bullfrog Power. Bullfrog has been working toward cleaner power since 2005 and has provided more than 5,000 GWh of green power to the grid since then. The company’s projects include large-scale and community-based green energy projects including solar, wind, and hydroelectric projects, as well as a biomethane plant collecting gas from Montreal’s garbage and a project working on getting biogas from the poo of the Zoo in Toronto.

“At Volvo, sustainability is just as important as safety,” said Matt Girgis, managing director of Volvo Car Canada. “Choosing to support our head office with 100 per cent renewable energy is a simple and effective way for us to demonstrate our commitment to a clean energy future.”

Volvo Cars launched its plan in 2019 to become climate-neutral by 2040. Last year, it announced that 50 per cent of its factories were powered by climate-neutral energy and that it was recycling 95 per cent of global production waste saving 640,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. Climate-neutral means that the company is seeking not to curb just carbon emissions, but all greenhouse gasses including methane, oxides of nitrogen, and other harmful gasses. Volvo’s Daqing and Chengdu plants in China are also now 100 percent climate-neutral powered.

The automaker has also recently announced that it now expects to have 50 per cent of its sales EVs by 2025 and is aiming for 100 per cent EV by 2030. It said last year it remanufactured more than 40,000 parts like gearboxes and engines instead of sending them to landfill, with the move saving nearly 3,000 tonnes of CO2. Volvo now says it wants to create closed-loop systems for emissions-heavy materials like steel and aluminum, further reducing emissions from procuring the vehicle essentials.

The ultimate goal, Volvo says, is that by 2040 every part in its cars should be “designed, developed and manufactured to be used and re-used, either by the company or its suppliers.” Currently, the automaker is working on reducing the life cycle carbon footprint of a vehicle by 40 percent of 2018 levels by 2025.

Volvo is currently exploring end-of-life use for EV batteries, including a current collaboration with BatteryLoop that uses “retired” car EV batteries for solar-powered energy storage. This month, the system will start powering EV and E-Bike chargers at a business center near Gothenburg, Sweden. The automaker is also engaged in a pilot program to increase flexibility at a Swedish hydroelectric plant by using EV battery packs from PHEV models to offer storage for the dam and work as a “fast-balancing” supply.

Shanghai show brings Tesla turmoil, and EVs aplenty

With the recent confirmation that the biennial Tokyo Motor show planned for October will be cancelled, it makes the inclusion of actual attendees (and lots of them) at the Shanghai Motor show that opened this week to the public all the more remarkable. Perhaps less so for Tesla, which was officially admonished not only by an unhappy Tesla owner, who managed to stand on the roof of a Tesla display car to protest alleged brake issues in her car until security escorted her out, but also officially by Chinese regulators, which labeled the company’s response to the woman’s actions at the show as well as in attempts for compensation as “arrogant and overbearing” in the state-backed Global Times publication.

China accounts for roughly 41 per cent of the global market for EVs, roughly equal right now to the European market, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has reportedly said China will likely become the brand’s largest market in the long-term. And it is likely why many major automakers chose to debut electric vehicles at the recent Shanghai show, in a year when most major international (and local) auto shows have so far been cancelled, and most automotive debuts have largely become largely online events. Many of these vehicles won’t make it to North America, such as the Lincoln Zephyr Reflection sedan concept, or the GM-backed Hong Guang Mini EV Cabrio (a Wuling Motors-GM- SAIC co-production of a droptop version of China’s tiny, inexpensive and most popular EV).

But here are some that will end up on our shores, or at least are slated to arrive in North America, and roughly in the order noted below – though chip shortages, battery delays or other COVID-19-related production issues could always affect these plans. We’ve also included links here for more detailed information on each, if available.

2022 BMW iX

Shanghai Motor Show EV

Though first presented online late last year, with all the auto show cancellations, BMW’s iX all-electric crossover made its auto show debut in Shanghai. It is slated to arrive early in 2022, with more than 500 hp and a 0-100 km/h time of under five seconds, predicts BMW. The company says it will be able to achieve up to 475 km, with preliminary colour, interior and other options already available on BMW Canada’s consumer site.

Cadillac Lyriq

Shanghai Motor Show EV

Another familiar face at the Shanghai show, the production 2023 Cadillac Lyriq made its global debut online at the same time as its show debut in China. Slated to arrive in the second quarter of 2022 in Canada, it will be Cadillac’s first all-electric model, and will compete with the Tesla Model Y and Jaguar’s sporting iPace, among other luxury crossover BEVs. Starting at just under $70,000, the Lyriq will offer roughly 485 km of range, Level III quick charging at up to 190 kW, five seats, and near-concept vehicle styling, highlighted by a symphony of welcoming LEDs whenever the driver approaches.

Mercedes-Benz EQB

Shanghai Motor Show EV

The compact Mercedes-Benz EQB looks just like the current gas-powered GLB compact crossover, outside of more aero-friendly wheels, its tallish and blocky styling helping it also offer its optional third row for shorter folks on the EQB as well (usable for child seats or people “up to 1.65 metres tall”, says Mercedes). Unlike other all-electric EQ models, the EQB will share a version of the same platform as its ICE counterpart, with models in Europe that offer both front and all-wheel drive versions. Driving range on the upcoming top EQB 350 4MATIC in Europe is 478 km (WLTP rated), but the company noted that a “particularly long-range version is also planned.” Mercedes-Benz Canada confirmed the EQB will arrive next year as a 2023 model, but hasn’t specified timing beyond that.

Genesis Electrified G80

Shanghai Motor Show EV

Another all-electric twin of a current gas-only vehicle is the Genesis Electrified G80 sedan, which marks not only the first plug-in Genesis model, but also the first Genesis global debut outside of South Korea, helping to mark Hyundai’s relatively new upscale brand’s upcoming expansion into China. The Electrified G80 mid-size sedan promises roughly 427 km of range, sub-5.0-second 0-100 km/h acceleration, and a super-quick 350 kW Level III charging rate, which would make it the fastest charging EV on the market if it achieves that figure by the time it arrives, estimated to be later this year or early next, but not confirmed either way by Hyundai, er, Genesis as of yet.

Audi A6 e-tron Sportback Concept

Shanghai Motor Show EV

This striking mid-size EV concept may look like a sculpted EV sport sedan, but as its Sportback moniker implies, it’s actually more of a flowing three-box hatchback “concept” shown with very real production intent. It will share the all-electric underpinnings of the group’s PPE vehicles such as the upcoming Porsche Macan EV, with Audi being coy about which of these PPE models will come first, but confirming that PPE architecture vehicles are slated to started production in late 2022. So consider this an all-electric successor to the A7 luxury hatchback, with an ambitious range target of “more than 700 kilometres (WLTP) in the future,” with performance variants able to sprint from rest to 100 km/h in less than four seconds, Audi predicts.

Honda SUV e:prototype

Shanghai Motor Show EV

This is where the future becomes hazier, when it comes to the timing (and possibility) of these Shanghai debuts making it to North America. Honda has recently come out and confirmed it plans to offer two-thirds of its vehicles as zero emissions by 2030, including both battery-electric (BEV) and fuel-cell vehicles (FCVs); and 100 per cent of its North American vehicles are to be electric by 2040. The smoothly styled crossover will launch for sale in China in spring 2022, which will offer over the air software updates, but no range or charging speed figures were yet released. Honda is lagging far behind in the BEV world right now, but did say that it would start volume EV sales in North America by model year 2024, with e:Architecture vehicles like this one to start arriving in the second half of this decade.

Toyota bZ4X Concept

Shanghai Motor Show EV

Like Honda, Toyota has not so far embraced battery electric vehicles, its management and government lobbying efforts often actively opposing the rapidly expanding move to zero-emissions vehicles and BEVs in particular. Yet Toyota has also recently announced that it plans to introduce 15 BEVs by 2025, with global sales of the first one unveiled in Shanghai called the bZ4X, an all-electric SUV it plans to produce together with Subaru. The bZ moniker stands for ‘Beyond Zero,’ the first of an all-electric line of seven bZ vehicles, which will be built on dedicated EV platforms, without specifying how many e-platforms in total it plans, nor any performance or range targets. But the bZ4X will ride on the jointly developed e-TNGA BEV-dedicated platform with all-wheel drive, plus will offer a unique steering wheel and a solar system that can add some range to the vehicle.

VW ID.6

Shanghai Motor Show EV

Built off the same platform as the upcoming ID. 4, the Volkswagen ID. 6 three-row crossover would seem a natural for SUV and space-loving North America. And the ID. 4 will be built at Volkswagen’s plant in Tennessee starting next year, barring any delays, and VW has confirmed that multiple BEVs will be coming from that plant. But right now, VW all official indications suggest this expanded version of the ID. 4 SUV will not be sold outside of China – at least any time soon.

Honda Testing Safe Swarm Vehicle Communication Safety Tech

Since 2017, Honda has been developing a new way to help prevent collisions called Safe Swarm that uses vehicle to everything (V2X) communication to allow cars and trucks to communicate with each other, with emergency vehicles, and even with the roadway itself to help make roads safer. Now the automaker is testing the services on the road with the help of Verizon and the University of Michigan’s MCity autonomous and connected vehicle facility to show how the system could help save lives.

The system uses sensors in the vehicle like speed, position, and direction, as well as relying on infrastructure changes like smart cameras mounted at intersections as well as safety alerts sent by emergency vehicles to the network. It’s the 5G technology and a new network architecture called mobile edge computing that makes it possible.

Today’s 4G cellular technology offers data transfer speeds of around 30 Mbps, on the slower end of your home internet DSL technology circa 2001. The fifth-generation of wireless cellular technology – 5G – can handle speeds starting at double that and then to as high as 1,000 Mbps. That’s more like modern household fibre internet, and it allows nearly everything around you to send massive amounts of data in a very short time. Data like your speed, the camera that sees a pedestrian blocked from you by a building, the red light-runner, or the fire truck that’s about to come through an intersection headed your way.

The speed means that instead of having the computing power and artificial intelligence to make the system work in every car, that Honda can instead use mobile edge computing. MEC puts a less capable computer in the vehicle that simply has to send info and receive directions from a Honda mainframe or cloud computing AI or directly from the traffic light or other vehicle. The car is now capable of communicating with the world around it and big software updates are done at the system, not the vehicle.

Safe Swarm

Honda and Verizon released a video showing three possible scenarios where the system could prevent a crash. The first is a pedestrian readying to cross at an intersection. They can’t be seen by the driver, but they can be seen by a camera at the signal. The camera sends the info over the 5G network and the car gets it in time to warn the driver through a visual alert on the dash.

The second is a warning of an emergency vehicle. Especially in urban centres, a police car, fire truck, or ambulance can be hard to see and hear. In this situation, the emergency responder vehicle sends out a signal that, again, warns the driver of the connected car.

Lastly, using vehicle sensor data, smart cameras, and Verizon Hyper Precise Location services, the V2X system can detect a vehicle that’s not stopping for a red light and warn surrounding vehicles. With the faster data transmission, the system can spot hazards more quickly than a driver, helping the driver to respond and alerting them of things they couldn’t possibly yet see.

“The ability to move computing power to the edge of our 5G network is an essential building block for autonomous and connected vehicles, helping cars to communicate with each other in near real-time and with sensors and cameras installed in streets and traffic lights,” said Sanyogita Shamsunder, vice-president of technology development and 5G Labs at Verizon. “When you consider that roughly 42,000 people were killed in car accidents last year and 94 per cent of accidents are caused by human error, our new technologies including 5G and MEC can help drivers ‘see’ things before the human eye can register and react helping to prevent collisions and save lives.”

Honda is continuing to develop the technology as what it calls a bridge to the automated vehicles of the future.

Base Camp: 2021 Ford F-250 XL

The common work truck isn’t so common anymore. A quick perusal of pickups on sale at dealers across the country reveal a plethora of four-door limousines with a bed attached. Still, the knock-em-down and get-it-done workhorse is still a staple of jobsites and construction crews across Canada, making this week’s Base Camp an interesting case study.

Freshened just a year ago, the 2021 Ford Super Duty line starts with the base XL trim and a naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 engine. That mill isn’t the newest kid on the block, but it is good for 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Given this is Canada (and our largest city just got a late-April accumulation of snow), it is worth noting the $42,119 base F-250 is rear-wheel drive. Adding 4×4 grip is a $3,500 option. However, a locking rear axle is standard equipment meaning drivers won’t be stuck with one wheel futilely spinning should they elect to stick with a 4×2 drivetrain.

Gone are the days when a work truck’s interior was little more than a stiff bench seat and a set of pedals. The driver faces a full instrument cluster, one which features a productivity screen controlled by buttons on the steering wheel. Air conditioning is standard, as is an adjustable steering wheel and a number of power outlets. Cloth seats will set you back an additional $260 but might be worth the cost depending how you plan to use the truck. There is no carpet on the floor.

Infotainment is handled by a head unit with a small but functional screen, one which accepts inputs from Bluetooth and works with the FordPass Connect app to help keep an eye on the truck’s status when you’re away. It’s always smart to plan ahead when buying a vehicle for work, making the $350 integrated brake controller and $150 overhead up-fitter switches wise investments. The latter will permit easy control of accessories you might add like lights or a winch.

Review 2021 Ford F-250 XL Review 2021 Ford F-250 XL

Cruise control is a standalone $350 option or can be had in a $500 XL Value Package. This will net you the driving aid plus a bit of chrome garnish on the exterior, if you care about that type of item on your work truck. The optional $100 roof-mounted clearance lamps do nothing for the pickup’s capability but look cool. Speaking of capability, this drivetrain and bodystyle configuration will net you an F-250 that is capable of bearing about 4,000 lbs of payload and hauling just over 13,000 lbs of tow-behind trailer.

What We’d Choose

There are literally millions of possible Super Duty configurations, so we’ll stick with examining the major powertrain options. Your author recommends the roughly $1,000 worth of comfort and appearance items mentioned above, but the addition of 4×4 is definitely case-specific. Under the hood, Ford’s new 7.3-litre V8 costs a not-insignificant $2,750 but is a more powerful engine (430hp/475tq) and a smart choice for anyone planning to haul a fifth-wheel style trailer with maximum capacity nearly cresting 20,000lbs.

However, with most trucks of this ilk being bought by penny-counting companies (or municipalities) and pressed into tough service conditions, those extra options may be a tough sell to the accounting department. But the bigger engine makes a good case for itself, especially if fifth-wheel towing is on the menu, and snazzy colours like the Race Red shown here are no-cost items.

Even the accounting department can’t argue with that.

Racing Roundup: They’re racing in the U.S. and we’re not

It felt kind of strange Sunday to be watching two races on television where the grandstands were packed at one and pretty full at the other, and I can’t go out to play a round of golf here where I live.

This is not a golf column. Nor is it a political column. But you have to wonder why the pandemic seems to be pretty much under control in the country to our south and nowhere near that up here. Some states have limits on attendance at sports events (8,000 fans at a time can watch the Detroit Tigers play) while others have none.

Vaccines seem to be the answer. The U.S. says that any American citizen who’s been fully vaccinated can visit Europe on holiday this summer. We ordered lots and didn’t get much. The ones we got then weren’t administered properly.

I got a shot (the one in which you’re supposed to get the second one 21 days later and I’m down to get that one in July; go figure) but I had no problems registering for an appointment or going to the hospital at the assigned time. In and out in a half-hour. Then I turn on my TV and people are sleeping outside to be first in line the next day at a clinic and I’m thinking what the hell is that?

The bottom line is that 135,000 people – about 40 per cent of capacity – will attend next month’s Indianapolis 500 but, as of this moment, (although races are still on the calendar), it is highly unlikely that any big-league spectator racing will take place at all in Ontario this summer.

But those who were lucky enough to snag a ticket, or tickets, to either of the races that went to the gate Sunday saw two beauties. Colton Herta won the NTT IndyCar Series race at St. Petersburg where about 25,000 were in attendance while Brad Keselowski won the Geiko 500 at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama in front of what was supposed to be 35 per cent (of 80,000) capacity but sure looked like a full house.

For a blow-by-blow story of Herta’s win in Florida, please click here

NOTES

Herta led 97 of the 100 laps. Alex Palou, who won the season opener, led two while Herta was taking on fuel and Simon Pagenaud, who finished third, led a lap at the leader’s second pit stop. Josef Newgarden was second. Doesn’t sound all that exciting but there was some pretty good racing along the way.

Our two Canadians didn’t fare particularly well. James Hinchcliffe of Oakville must have felt like he had a target on his car. Takuma Sato ran into him early in the race and he had to stop to change a tire and then late in the race Ed Jones did the same thing. Hinch managed to survive the second assault without pitting. He started 12th and was 18that the checkers. Dalton Kellett of Stouffville suffered an electrical malfunction and the car was done for the day. He started 24th and was 23rd at the end.

Okay, listen up. This is important. IndyCar doesn’t have one rival for TV eyeballs in the USA, it’s now got two. And if has to do something about that. Fast.

When Tony Kanaan won the Indy 500 in 2013, he got down on his hands and knees and kissed the yard of bricks. I wrote a column and said that somebody should have gone up to him at that moment and given him a kick in the butt. I wrote that the media would consider the 500 just another car race but if somebody had done what I suggested, it would have been the lead item on TV newscasts that night and on front pages around the world the next morning.

I’m serious. These guys think they’re club racers. Helio Castroneves said so, in so many words, a few years ago when I wrote another column in which I quoted Paul Tracy suggesting the series needed a Black Hat. “We’re not like that,” Castronever said in Toronto during the Honda Indy. “We like each other.”

Which brings us to Sunday. Graham Rahal and Alexander Rossi had a dust-up after which, if I’d been Rahal (or Rossi, take your pick), I’d have tried to punch the other guy. Then I would have said something witty like, “Your mother wears Army boots,” and if he or somebody else had challenged me, I’d have said, “‘Hit Man’ Tommy Hearns couldn’t beat me, you wanna try?”

But did we have that? Nooo. Both those guys, Rossi and Rahal, couldn’t have been nicer. Best buds, in fact. Which is scary. I’ll tell you why.

A week ago, F1’s Grand Prix at Imola attracted 906,000 viewers on a U.S. cable channel (ESPN), who saw a big crash between George Russell and Valtteri Bottas, after which Russell ran over to Bottas and slapped his helmet and Bottas gave Russell a one-finger salute. And somebody other than Lewis Hamilton – Max Verstappen – won. IndyCar, meantime, was on a network, NBC, one of the Big Three in the U.S., and attracted 921,000 viewers, just a few more than F1 on cable. The IndyCar viewers watched a parade, which was won by a guy who is racing in his second year but that nobody has heard of.

NASCAR, of course, was going ‘round and ‘round at Richmond last week, on the same day that F1 and IndyCar were holding races, and had several millions tune in. It was bad enough for IndyCar to be second to NASCAR but if F1 moves ahead in the ratings game and IndyCar drops to No. 3, you have to wonder about its future.

If there not another Paul Tracy out there?

They talked about this on the telecast but there was no excuse for IndyCar hanging Jimmie Johnson out to dry the way they did. Johnson went off the track and slid into the barrier and IndyCar just left him there. It was suggested that they were waiting for him to back up and get going again but even an experienced IndyCar driver can have trouble doing that. It’s not easy to pop one of those cars into reverse without stalling it and even if you can, where Johnson was marooned, meant he would be backing up into traffic, which can be dangerous for everybody. They finally threw the yellow, but you had to wonder: did they do that to embarrass him? Cut him down to size? Big NASCAR star coming in here and getting all the publicity? We’ll show him. Whatever, they shouldn’t have done what they did. I hope Chip Ganassi, who’s running him, let IndyCar know they’d better not do that again.

IndyCar will be at the big speedway in Dallas next weekend for a double-header. They’ll race Saturday night at 7 p.m. and then again Sunday night at 5.  The races won’t be on NBC so we’ll see how Rogers handles things.

I must admit I didn’t watch much of the Cup race from Talladega. I saw Joey Logano take a terrible tumble (upside down) at the end of the first stage and then I watched Matt DiBenedetto, who probably didn’t get much sleep last night, make the wrong move and lose the race to Brad Keselowski in overtime. For a blow-by-blow account, please click hereJeb Burton won the Xfinity Series race Saturday. Driver Derrick Lancaster remains in hospital in critical but stable condition after being burned when his car caught fire following a crash in the ARCA race at Talladega.

NEWS ‘N NOTES

Anytime anybody tells you that rallying is a safe motorsport, slap them upside the head. Three athletes were killed last week in the Targa Tasmania. Drivers Shane Navin and Leigh Mundy and navigator Dennis Neagle died in vehicle rollovers. Motorsport Australia has ordered an investigation.

Vancouver will vote this week on whether to allow a Formula Electric race to be run through city streets. I know at least one of the promoters and I wish her the best of luck. I also wish the best of luck to the city of Vancouver which is, according to the latest news story I read, expecting a tourism bonanza along the lines of the early Molson Indy races that were held out there.  I hope they’ve done their homework. Meantime, at F-E races this weekend in Spain, they had a disaster in the first race when most of the cars ran out of juice on the last lap (the races are timed events) and the second one came close to a repeat. Nyck de Vries won that first race while Jake Dennis (who?) won the second race.

U.S. National Sprint Car Hall of Fame member Dave Darland suffered a mild stroke at the weekend and is recovering in hospital.  He was the 1999 U.S. Auto Club National Midget Champion (he repeated in 2001 and 2003), the 1999 National Sprint Car Champion and the 2007 USAC Silver Crown Champion. He is only the third driver in USAC history to win all three championships.

Charlie Glotzbach, a four-time winner in the NASCAR Cup Series back in the day, has died at age 82. Never a full-time racer, he also won races in the ARCA Series. His full-time job was owner of a truck sales business in southern Indiana.

News Roundup: Luxury Car Tax, VW Taos Priced, Loads of EVs, More

The 2021 Federal budget plans some new luxury taxes along with some incentives to help boost greener cars. It starts with a new tax on cars that sell for more than $100,000, with the tax calculated as the lesser of 20 per cent of the value above $100,000 or 10 per cent of the full value. This covers sports cars as well as pickups, SUVs, and minivans, though commercial vehicles, cargo vans, and other exceptions are made. Sales tax will apply to the final price, including the luxury tax. $104.6 million will go to strengthening emissions regulations for vehicles (as well as landfills), $56.1m to work on ZEV charging and fueling stations (working toward kWh billing for chargers in place of per-minute), and offering business income takes cuts for companies manufacturing ZEV tech.

Volkswagen’s 2022 Taos compact crossover is set to arrive in July, offering a slightly shorter and smaller package than the Tiguan, along with a slightly smaller price. Taos will start at $26,695 for a front-drive model, or $29,195 for a Trendline AWD. Comfortline AWD is $32,395 and Highline AWD is $36,695, all not including destination of fees. The Taos has a 1.5-litre turbo-four making 158 hp, and though the overall length is 236mm shorter than Tiguan, passenger space is just 45L less.

Genesis revealed the Electrified G80 at the Shanghai auto show. The E-G80 will get a pair of electric motors that make a total of 364 hp, and Genesis predicts 500 km on the NEDC test cycle. 400V/800V rapid charging will allow a 10 to 80 per cent charge in as little as 22 minutes, while a 3.6 kW plug allows you to run household appliances from the electric battery. Inside, sustainable materials including recycled wood, recycled plastics, and natural leather dyes will be used.

Cadillac trickled out some more details about the Lyriq electric crossover last week. The model is set to arrive in Q1 2022, starting from $69,898 including destination, with rear-drive a 480 km Canadian range estimate and 340 hp. All-wheel drive is coming. 19.2 kW available L2 charging is the fastest possible on that protocol, while DC fast-charge can add up to 122 km in 10 minutes. Cadillac also said that the plan going forward is no more new ICE vehicle introductions.

The Toyota bZ4X concept shows off a new electric vehicle and helps launch a new electric brand. Toyota says it will have 15 EV models globally by 2025 and seven will wear the Toyota bZ brand like this one. Looking like a Prime’d version of the Toyota RAV4, this is a handsome and futuristic-looking crossover. The bz4X was developed with Subaru on an all-new platform. Models from both automakers are expected to go on sale next year.

Lexus updated the ES for 2022 with mild exterior changes but an infotainment system revamp inside. The standard 8.0 and optional 12.3-inch displays are now 110 mm closer to the driver and add touch interface. While the Remote Touch Interface remains, this should be a significant upgrade for usability. Lexus has also added Safety Sense+ 2.5 that brings improved camera and radar elements giving collision avoidance tools more range.

Mercedes-Benz EQBs

Mercedes-Benz revealed an electrified version of its GLB small three-row crossover called the EQB. It gets a smoothed over nose and special EQ interior trim, expected to be offered here with a 288 hp two-motor AWD driveline. The battery pack will cut into third-row space, but that chair is largely for children anyway so the few cm will likely not be missed. Expect the model here sometime in 2022 with pricing to be revealed.
