AutoShow to make a comeback and the focus in ’22 will be on EVs

The first time I drove an electric car, it was a Nissan Leaf and I took it around the block at the Toronto Star building in downtown Toronto. It felt like I was driving an expensive golf cart.

We were an adventurous bunch at Toronto Star Wheels back then. It was 2012 and we borrowed a Leaf and a Chevrolet Volt for six months and compared them. The people who knew what they were doing—the Kenzies and Bleakneys and McIntoshes— got to keep the cars for a week or two to do proper comparisons. We let other members of the staff borrow them for weekends and report their impressions.

Nello Merante, an office messenger, reported that he’d always wondered whether he’d be electrocuted if he was driving an electric car and it started to rain. To find out, he took a deep breath and drove the Volt through a car wash. He survived.  We let the former editor in chief have the Leaf once but he wasn’t terribly informative, explaining that when people asked him what kind of EV he was driving, he would say a black one.

That was nearly 10 years ago and EVs were a curiosity. Now, while not exactly mainstream, they have legitimacy. People who live in the suburbs with two-car garages are seriously thinking about buying an EV, if they haven’t already got one. Which is good news for the folks who run the Canadian International AutoShow, which will be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in February.

The word around the automotive journalism community is that some of the manufacturers planning to participate in the annual extravaganza – it wasn’t held last year because of the pandemic – intend to showcase their electric vehicles in greater numbers than before, and a couple are even planning to mount special displays.

Autoshow

TORONTO, ON – FEBRUARY 20 – Children look at the 2020 Acura NSX at The Canadian International AutoShow at Metro Toronto Convention Centre, February 20, 2020. Andrew Francis Wallace/Toronto Star

To check this out, I called Jason Campbell, general manager of the AutoShow, which is Canada’s largest consumer trade show (335,000 attended in 2020), and asked him to fill me in. While he was excited about the EV revolution, and what it would do for the AutoShow, he was more interested in talking to me about a survey the show distributed recently. The survey showed, in a nutshell, that people – regular customers of the show – can hardly wait for it to open on the Friday of Ontario Family Day weekend, Feb. 18, and run for the next 10 days, wrapping up on Sunday, Feb. 27.

“It is really good news,” Campbell said. “The people who responded to our survey are looking forward to everything that the participating manufacturers are planning to show. They aren’t alone. Whether it’s Tokyo, Beijing, Frankfurt or Los Angeles – auto-show fans are the same the world over: they want to see what’s new.

“It’s one thing for consumers to look at auto advertisements online or in the Toronto Star but when push comes to shove, they want to see a car or a light truck up close and personal. Nothing beats standing close to a new car, to sit in it, to smell it and realize how it would feel while out on the road.”

Campbell said he and other members of the AutoShow management team were delighted that the AutoShow will be back at the downtown convention centre. Noting that it was the last major auto show to take place before the pandemic forced lockdowns globally, Campbell said attendees would notice some changes this time around.

“Everybody – workers, exhibitors, attendees – will have to be fully vaccinated and masked when at the show,” he said. “Aisles in exhibits will be widened and attendee numbers will be regulated by timed-entry/exit ticketing that will allow for physical distancing.”

Campbell said the show intends to continue being the ultimate presenter of all things automotive. As well as manufacturers rolling out the latest models across all price ranges, there will be a selection of far-out concept cars. Autostrada magazine will present the latest in exotic supercars in the Auto Exotica display, while classic favourites will against be presented by the show’s friends at the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The show will also continue to showcase the way technology is changing the automobile and our relationship with it. “Technological advances continue to disrupt the automotive marketplace,” said Dave McClean, director of marketing.

“As the auto industry continues to evolve and adapt, the AutoShow will continue to put a spotlight on not only what’s new today, but also what’s coming tomorrow.”

Campbell was concerned – just about everybody who likes to get out and about shared his apprehension – that the fourth wave of the pandemic might prevent the auto show from happening. But in recent weeks, the Ontario government lifted capacity restrictions on facilities like the Rogers Arena, where the Raptors and Leafs play, and the convention centre got the green light for the AutoShow.

But will people go? To find out, the AutoShow surveyed past attendees and with just over 23,000 surveys completed, more than 90 per cent said they would definitely attend or seriously consider it.

Adding insight, two-thirds of respondents indicated that they will be in the market for a hybrid or full EV for their next new vehicle purchase. Full details of the survey, which was conducted Oct. 13 to 18, are available on the AutoShow website.

The show is once again planning to occupy both the North and South buildings of the convention centre. Tickets will go on sale in December.

So what about which EV manufacturers will be planning special displays, Jason?

“Next column,” he said.

I can hardly wait.

The Allure of Motorcycle Camping

With the peak of Razorback Mountain looming in the distance and the sun dipping behind it, I’m fumbling with poles, stakes, and my tiny ripstop-nylon bivvy for the first time in my life. Equal parts exhausted from the day’s ride from Bella Coola and excited for my first night under the stars, I still find it hard to believe that it took thirty-six years for me to hunker down into a tent. My inexperience shows as I’m the last of our group to set-up despite having the simplest of structures. Regardless, I’m elated to have my modest home ready for the night.

More than that, there is an extra sense of pride and accomplishment knowing that the entirety of my humble abode — tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, pillow and even some cooking gear — all emerged from a set of side cases fastened to my motorcycle. While the stunning backdrop of BC’s interior didn’t hurt, there is something about this self-sufficiency that taps into the nomadic part of my soul. The experience cements a decision that motorcycle camping will become a lifelong pursuit.

My latest trip had my cousin Jeff and I plotting a four-day loop through northern Ontario. There are a smattering of roadside attractions we wanted to check out as well as some towns and roads that sparked interest. So, with that in mind, we book campsites in Temagami, Timmins, and Tobermory. Our “Crossing T’s Tour” had life.

motorcycle camping
Autumn may have dawned a few shortened days ago but nowadays summer’s epilogue tends to run sixty pages deep. As such, we were hopeful for warm and sunny days to end September.

It started as a drizzle around Orillia, but by the time we pulled into The Screaming Heads of Midlothian we felt fully submerged. Admittedly, the sombre and weeping skies lent some atmosphere to the art installation in Burk’s Falls. Hundreds of concrete sculptures — some in the form of dragons, others as spiders but most as screaming heads — dot the landscape of artist Peter Carmani’s 130-acre home. An impressive site that’s well worth the ride, it even offers land on which to pitch a tent for the night. I make a mental note of that fact for a future adventure before posing with my bike in the gaping maw of a “head” near the exit.

motorcycle camping

The rain is relentless as it follows us to our campsite at Finlayson Point. During check-in, I notice the two puddles our sopping-wet gear is depositing while the ranger marvels that we still plan on camping. It’s the last weekend the park will be open for overnighters but this weather has caused many cancellations. Needless to say, we’re the only motorcyclists on the register.

Our campsite overlooks Lake Temagami, and in the distance, I spot an enlarging speck of blue sky. The ground is sodden but the showers relent as tents unfurl and gear unburdens. With dinner cooking on the campfire, I’m hoping that the clouds blow out and we’ll be rewarded with a soul-warming sunset. Mother nature doesn’t exactly disappoint, although she did toss in a short sun shower.

motorcycle camping

With the sun shining the next morning, we quickly consolidate camp into our panniers and make tracks towards Earlton and our date with a nine-ton bison. Measuring nearly 6m tall and 8m long, Earl the Bison is a metal monster complete with Christmas lights and an impressive set of, um, prairie oysters. Our next campsite is only a few hours away, so we ditch the main road and meander towards Iroquois Falls before stopping in Kirkland Lake and scratching our heads over the fact that there is a town named Swastika in Ontario. As if on cue, the rain began to fall as soon as we left Earl and followed us through each town before relenting at Kettle Lakes Provincial Park, our home for the night.

Much like the night before, we have the park to ourselves, save for one bold and curious chipmunk. We take turns battling it and the smokey fire our wet wood is producing. Snuggled into my tent, I set an alarm for the morning. With a ferry crossing in the afternoon, we won’t be left with much time to sightsee.

The morning air is crisp, to say the least. A quick camp coffee gets us both warmed and moving as we’re greeted by more grey and heavy skies. Thankfully it didn’t rain overnight but our day of riding looks like it will be in keeping with soggy tradition.

motorcycle camping

Highway 144 runs 271 km connecting Timmins and Sudbury. It is one of the most beautiful roads I’ve ridden in Ontario. Lined by boreal forest, lakes and hulking chunks of Canadian Shield the scenery is breathtaking as it undulates across the Northern Divide. We make a quick stop at The Watershed for some strong hot coffee and a gooey butter tart.

The skies finally clear as we drop onto Manitoulin Island. Highway 6 is another magical ribbon of asphalt and every dry curve feels indulgent. It’s been years since I’ve ridden the Big Canoe at the end of the road, but the artfully wrapped MS Chi-Cheemaun is a familiar and welcome sight. One of the benefits of motorcycle travel is that we riders are the first on and off of the ship, but that plus is trivial in the grand scheme.

Sitting around our final campfire in Bruce Peninsula National Park, surrounded by RVs and car-campers, Jeff asks if I’d ever consider doing this same trip in a car? I looked at him quizzically before we both broke out in laughter and I dismissed the thought. In the same way that a hotel will break up or interrupt the flow of the road, a car or truck does the same to the camping experience — it takes you out of the very elements you’re seeking. With motorcycle camping, that isn’t the case, the adventure never ends.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover looks gorgeous

Before the pandemic, if a car manufacturer wanted auto journalists to review their latest offering, they loaded everybody onto Air Canada or Air France or Lufthansa and flew us off to Frankfurt or Lisbon or Salt Lake City and let us take the new car or light truck out to play.

Usually, the new vehicle would turn out to be tickety-boo. Rarely did we find a problem, even with the lowest-priced brands. The point is, we could drive the car and check it out and come to a conclusion.

These days, hardly anybody is travelling. Yes, some journalists are back on the planes, but I figure they either have a death wish or a bad marriage. Anything to get out of the house

But the manufactures still have to sell cars and the best way – one of the best ways, anyway – is to send those of us still at home everything you would ever want to know about the new car and let us use our expertise to pick out what’s best to tell you about.

So here we go. The car in question is the new 2022 Land Rover Range Rover. It looks great; I can hardly wait to see it in person. Interestingly, it is one of the best-looking cars I think I’ve ever seen.

Let’s remember: Land Rover started life as an off-road mud buggy. Up hill and down dale, that sort of thing. These days, we’re talking about a luxury vehicle that you can drive yourself or be chauffeured.  You can still drive it off the road, and some do and there is technology to help make it easier but for the amount of money you’re going to have to spend to buy this vehicle, chances are you’re likely not going to do it often.

In point form, then. here’s what you can look forward to: Forget leather. It’s so 2020. Now Land Rover is boasting about a new premium textile that combines Ultrafabrics and Kvadrat wool blend. This is about agribusiness and its effect on the environment.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

Think about riding in an airplane. A combination of engine noise and wind speed means it’s loud out there. Inside the plane, though, it’s quite quiet. Land Rover engineers have gone to work and created next-generation noise cancelling with headrest speakers means it’s downright silent inside the car.

Standard all-wheel steering combines high-speed stability with low-speed maneuverability to create the smallest turning circle of any Land Rover SUV.

Flex-body architecture creates standard and long-body styles with four, five and seven-seat interiors. All four doors will be power assisted.

The now-usual safety technology is front-and-centre as are all the touch screens. There are more, of course, depending on the number of seats.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

In addition to the standard inline six, a new twin-turbo V8 turns out 523 horsepower and can go from zero-100 kms in 4.6 seconds.

Land Rover is launching an all-electric battery model in 2024. The 434 hp plugin will go 100 kms before it will need to be recharged,

The now-usual safety technology is front-and-centre as are all the touch screens. There are more, of course, depending on the number of seats.

The pricing starts at $126,400 for the base model and tops off at $182,000. You can have one in your driveway in the spring of 2022, but if you want one, you’d better order one now.

The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Just Put Ferrari and McLaren on Notice

Chevrolet has just intensified the C8 Corvette, adding an all-new V8, the highest naturally-aspirated production V8 anywhere. The LT6 engine is the heart of the Corvette Z06, giving it nearly 700 hp and spinning close to 9,000 rpm, making for a positively track-ready car from Chevrolet.

That LT6 engine, which Chevrolet’s audio clips show sounding better than a V8 Ferrari, is a dual overhead cam engine with a flat-plane crank (the ultralight source of that soundtrack) and a dry-sump oiling system. 670 horses are on tap arriving at 8,400 rpm, and the peak 460 lb-ft shows up at 6,300 rpm. Redline? 8,600 rpm with dual-coil valve springs and CNC-machined intake ports to help you use every revolution. This engine is the basis for the one used in the C8.R race cars since 2019, and Chevrolet says racing has improved performance and durability.

The transmission? It will still be the eight-speed dual-clutch found in the standard Stingray, but here it will get a new 5.56 final drive for enhanced acceleration.

Wider fenders cover wider 10-inch front and 13-inch rear wheels and their 275 front, 345 rear (25 series!!) Michelin Pilot Sport 4S ZP tires. Sport Cup 2 R rubber is optional, part of a Z07 package. A new nose is cribbed from the C8.R racer with larger vents to bring more air into a centre heat exchanger and to cool the engine, brakes, and transaxle. At the back,a new rear fascia makes the exhaust pipes look like they’re floating in the space behind the car.

2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Stock Z06 will offer a front splitter and rear spoiler that helps to produce 365 lbs of downforce at 299 km/h. A Z07 carbon fibre aero package makes the front splitter larger, adds front corner dive planes, and a pedestal rear wing for even more downforce, making 734 lbs at the same speed, the most of any Corvette ever.

Magnetic ride control is standard, recalibrated for the 2023 Z06, and offering a mix of comfort or track performance. Z07 has special FE7 settings with its own magnetic settings. The Z06 gets launch control, performance traction management for the track, and an electronic limited-slip diff. Chevrolet claims 1.22g on the skidpad with a Z07-pack car and its special options.

2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Stopping the car are 14.6-inch front and 15-inch diameter rear rotors with six-piston calipers up front. Even larger carbon-ceramic units come with the Z07 package to make sure brake fade disappears, even on the circuit.

A carbon-wrapped steering wheel and paddles are part of the cosmetic changes. Hand-wrapped leather trim is also available for the cabin. Seven wheel packages (with carbon wheels) are on the list and there is an exclusive carbon trim pack.

It’s a long way from the original Z06 package of 1963 that was made up mostly of a larger gas tank for fewer pit stops, and the all-new 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 starts production next summer. Pricing (and fuel economy) have yet to be revealed.

How Porsche Plans to Save The Internal Combustion Engine

Porsche has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. And they won’t be killing off the internal combustion engine to do it.

Before you get too excited, Porsche does plan on electric vehicles playing a major — and indeed the majority role in working towards their net-zero emissions goal.

Porsche estimates 50% of its vehicles sold will be fully electric by 2025, and they expect that number to grow to 80% by 2030.

With electric vehicles becoming the undeniable tip of the spear on the brand’s quest to net-zero emissions, Porsche is also introducing a number of innovations to make electric cars more sustainable.

Firstly — and this can only be seen as mud in the eye of Tesla — Porsche is ramping up a global High Voltage (HV) battery repair network, which will train Porsche technicians to service and repair HV battery packs. This means a malfunctioning HV battery pack will no longer have to be entirely replaced. EVs can be serviced just like ICE vehicles (not exactly like them, obviously, but you get the idea).

Porsche has even determined how they can use existing tools (such as speciality lifts used to remove and service gearboxes) to service EV battery packs.

The second play in Porsche’s long game is to mitigate the carbon-intensive process of manufacturing EVs.

Partly, this means using recycled materials for new batteries. Porsche claims it has been making improvements to its existing recycling processes in order to increase the proportion of raw materials in circulation and to re-use these materials in new batteries.

Porsche has also been trying to determine the perfect battery size for an EV; the intention being to balance power, weight, range and charge time, while using the smallest batteries possible to achieve the most minimal carbon footprint.

Porsche recon, for the average consumer/commuter, the sweet spot is a 100kWh battery with a roughly 500 km range.

So that’s what’s going to happen for 80% of new Porsches sold by 2030.

But you’re here for the other 20%; the vehicles that will feature the ol’ suck-squeeze-bang-blow you’re familiar with.

Porsche plans to not only achieve zero emissions as a brand while continuing to offer ICE vehicles, but also wants to address the issue of the massive number of ICE cars which will still be on the road well into 2030.

Their answer is eFuel.

Porsche eFuels

“Decarbonization can only be achieved by replacing fossil fuels with renewable sources,” said Jan Simon Ohmstedt, Porsche’s Project Manager eFuels.

Ohmstedt added that Porsche sees, “eFuel as a complement to e-mobility,” and mentioned that this will be how Porsche is, “decarbonizing the new 911” which suggests the 911 will continue to be available in ICE variants (please, let it be so).

eFuel-powered ICE vehicles will not have zero tailpipe emissions. However, the genius of eFuel is that it uses C02 in its production — and it theoretically takes more C02 to make eFuel than burning it produces.

“We urgently need a solution for operating existing fleets of vehicles in a sustainable way,” explains Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at Porsche AG. “This goal can be achieved with green fuels, which are a sensible complement to electric vehicles.”

The trick then is ensuring that the process of manufacturing eFuel is as sustainable as possible.

Porsche eFuels

Porsche’s solution is to look outside of population-dense areas which require large stocks of renewable energy to service electric charging and indeed entire power grids. That means looking outside of Europe and towards their eFuel pilot plant in Chile.

“A wind turbine located next to the pilot plant in Chile operates at full load for an average of 270 days per year,” claims Porsche’s official press release. “The same equipment in Germany would only do so for around 80 days per year, due to the country’s geographical and meteorological conditions. This means that the Chilean wind power plant’s 74 per cent utilization ratio for full-load hours is three and a half times higher than could be achieved in Germany, where the utilisation ratio is 22 per cent from all onshore wind turbines.”

Porsche eFuels

Porsche reckons that by 2022, the pilot plant will have produced around 130,000 litres of eFuels. Porsche has committed to purchasing this volume in full – and says it will initially use the fuel primarily in its motorsports, in particular the 2022 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. The 2021 season featured use of Esso’s bio-based fuel, which had begun testing in 2019.

Porsche predicts eFuel to be backwards compatible with older ICE vehicles, when “blended to current market fuel standards” and anticipates a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85 percent.

‘Win on Sunday, sell on Monday’ is alive and well, even when Sentras race against themselves

Motorsport enthusiasts fondly remember the heyday of “win on Sunday, sell on Monday.” Winning the Indianapolis 500 or 24 Hours of Daytona is still a big deal, of course, but there was a time when those wins meant everything to the brands that competed for them. When Richard Petty won the Daytona 500 in a Plymouth, people showed up at Plymouth dealerships shortly afterward. Winning equated to success, so people wanted to drive the brands that made them look successful. It was that simple.

These days, motorsport can be a little more complicated, and automakers are looking for different sorts of returns on their investments.

Single-make series such as the Nissan Sentra Cup, which is currently the only manufacturer-supported racing series in Canada, don’t mix brands: Nissan Sentras compete only against other Nissan Sentras.  Does this mean the “win on Sunday, sell on Monday” concept doesn’t apply? Nissan Canada supplied Wheels.ca with some real-world sales figures that suggest otherwise.

The Sentra Cup debuted in its new format – revamped from its original form, the Nissan Micra Cup – in late June. In August 2021, less than two months later, more than 50 per cent of Canadians who purchased a Sentra came to Nissan from a different brand. When you shift that view to two-year leases, the number of brand conquests goes up to 70 per cent.

Nissan Sentra Cup

And as far as pure retail sales go – meaning cars that were sold to Canadian families and not for rental or delivery fleets – more Sentras were sold in August than in any other month since June 2016. Plus, according to Nissan Canada’s records going all the way back to 2007, the Sentra has never held as large a share of the compact sedan market as it does today.

These changes can’t only be attributed to the Sentra Cup, of course. The Sentra’s redesign for the 2020 model year went a long way in making it more competitive, and several brands have left the compact sedan market in recent years, which puts a bigger slice of the pie up for grabs. But Nissan Canada president Steve Milette says the Sentra Cup has played a tangible role in these improvements.

“For us, it’s just the right decision, to push Sentra and to build the brand,” Milette says. “We can really demonstrate how durable and reliable this vehicle is. It’s high-quality, it looks good, and it can race.”

It also helps to generate enthusiasm for the product, including with Nissan’s own dealers. One dealer took this to a new level in 2021: Darren Graham is the CEO of Applewood Auto Group and oversees 10 dealerships in British Columbia, including three Nissan stores. Graham’s excitement for Nissan Canada’s racing program started with motorsport-branded cars in his showrooms, and it culminated with him flying from Vancouver to Ontario and Quebec to compete as a driver in every Sentra Cup race weekend this season.

“When they moved from the Micra to the Sentra, there were all these compelling things that came along with that,” Graham says of his decision to go racing. “The Sentra has actually got a lot of prowess. It’s a great car. I’m a Nissan dealer, so (Sentra Cup) promotes the brand.

Nissan Sentra Cup

“My favourite racing series was the Trans-Ams in the 60s. Those were actual cars that people would race on Sunday and sell on Monday. … Eventually I said, okay, I have to do this.”

Graham says his participation has not only helped him learn more about the Sentra’s capabilities but has also provided other benefits he can take back to his day job at his dealerships, including giving his staff something to rally behind.

“My team at home, they’re all excited,” Graham says. “My director of parts was involved with getting the car stickered, and all my team members are involved in some capacity. We’re going to ship the car back and move it from showroom to showroom, drag it around and show it off. So, that will have a huge impact when people see the car, scars and all.

“I’ve learned as much about driving as I have about human nature and being a dynamic leader.”

The Sentra Cup went through its first year in its new form during a pandemic. This means these effects were seen despite the cancellation of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, which was to be the Sentra Cup’s headlining event, and through a schedule that saw spectators allowed only at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières and on a very limited basis. This means Nissan’s usual methods of generating interest, such as offering owner-exclusive access to premium events, haven’t yet come into the picture.

“As soon as we get the green light, we’re going to bring that to the next level as we did with Micra,” Milette says. “It’s just a matter of time.”

For now, Milette says, Nissan is one of the few brands staying the course with cars as opposed to SUVs, and he says racing is an ideal expression of that commitment, which Sentra Cup serves to highlight.

“We’re committed to passenger cars,” Milette says. “We think racing is part of what we should participate in actively as a company. … In Canada, we’re able to continue and explore with the Sentra Cup because it helps us change the opinion of our brand. And that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Weekly News Roundup: Best Interiors, Clean Fuel for BC, Tacoma Upgrades, More

Industry analysts Wards Auto has announced its annual 10 Best Interiors list, showcasing some of the best cabins in the business based on factors like materials, ergonomics, comfort, and design aesthetic. While there are some big-money models on the list (Bentley Bentayga Speed), value is important. That means mainstream models on the list, including the new Ford F-150, and Mustang Mach-E, as well as the Honda Civic, Hyundai Tucson, and Mitsubishi Outlander, which all offer impressive cabins in vehicles that meet most budgets. Rounding out the list were the GMC Yukon Denali, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Land Rover Defender, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Bentley Interior

A new facility aiming to produce fuel for vehicles using carbon dioxide from the air, reducing atmospheric carbon and delivering 100 million litres of fuel per year, has just been announced for BC. The announcement comes from Huron Clean Energy, partnered with the Upper Nicola Band and Carbon Engineering, with an investment from the BC Government’s Innovative Clean Energy Fund. The site is set to be built near Merritt, B.C., and use B.C.’s hydroelectricity to help generate the fuels cleanly. Fuels including gas, diesel, and jet fuel would be produced, creating, the announcement said, up to 90 per cent fewer emissions than conventional hydrocarbons. The technology to produce the fuel was designed in Canada by Carbon Engineering. Construction on the site is expected to start in 2023.

For 2022, the Toyota Tacoma gets enhancements to both the TRD Pro and Trail Edition trucks, along with new colour choices for some of its lineup. Tacoma Trail offers a new suspension lift with rear differential lock as well as increased track width and a skid plate, all to boost off-road capability. That truck will also have all-terrain tires on 16-inch wheels. TRD Pro adds a lift, machine forged TRD upper control arms, a new wheel design with “enhanced” all-terrain tires, and TRD Pro bed stamping. It also adds Electric Lime to the colour palette. All Tacomas come with a 3.5-litre V6 and while a six-speed auto is the most common transmission, a stick is offered on select versions. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma starts from $39,890, up $1,540 from last year’s base price.

A sharp departure from the usual EV and low-emissions announcements from automakers, Chevrolet Performance has just announced its biggest and most powerful crate engine ever. The ZZ632 is a 632 cubic inch (10.4-litre) V8 that makes 1,004 hp and 876 lb-ft of torque. The monster is made of cast iron with aluminum heads but can still rev to 7,000 r.p.m. This is a fuel-injected engine, and Chevrolet Performance says they tested a single engine to handle more than 200 drag strip passes on the dyno. The new engine will not come in a production car, but will be sold by Chevrolet Performance dealers, with deliveries to start early next year.

Toyota has priced the 2022 Sienna minivan, with the model that was all-new just last year seeing few changes for 2022 apart from the price. LE and XLE models add roof rails and the Limited AWD gets Ottoman seats for the second row, and that’s about it. The all-hybrid model sill offers 245 hp and an estimated 6.5 L/100 km (6.7 with AWD), and the Sienna has Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0 including lane departure alert, radar cruise, and other driver assistance features. Pricing starts up $500 from last year at $40,490 for an LE FWD, and ranges through eight models to the $58,780 Sienna Limited.

Base Camp: 2022 Toyota Sienna LE

Every week, wheels.ca selects a new vehicle and takes a good look at its entry-level trim. If we find it worthy of your consideration, we’ll let you know. If not, we’ll recommend one – or the required options – that earns a passing grade.

Even though SUVs and crossovers have long usurped minivans as the family vehicle of choice for many Canadians, a few manufacturers continue to invest heavily in the development of these boxes on wheels. Despite fewer options, there is an argument to be made that the vans which do remain are the best of their breed.

Toyota recently re-upped in this segment by adding four-cylinder hybrid power as standard equipment in their Sienna minivan. While it only manages 245 horsepower, its real-world fuel economy is very attractive, with our tests turning up an impressive 6.5L/100km performance. Customers will get this powertrain no matter how much cash they spend on a Sienna, though all-wheel drive is an extra-cost option.

Practicality is any van’s raison d’etre, and the Sienna brings the goods in this regard. Even the base LE trim ($4x,xxx) has tri-zone climate control, for example, ensuring both front seat passengers and the peanut gallery can adjust ambient temperature to their own desires. This makes more of a difference than one may think on long journeys. The front chairs are heated, with the driver’s receiving power adjustments, while the side view mirrors and wiper park area also benefit from heated grids. That leather-wrapped steering wheel is heated, too.

2022 Toyota Sienna

Digital goodies on the LE include a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, an ample number of USB charging ports (some of which are handily placed on the dashboard’s ‘flying bridge’) and safety kit like Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 plus a blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert.

Styling generally doesn’t rank too high on the priority list for most minivan shoppers, but it helps if the thing doesn’t look like a battered hamster. Toyota says the Sienna’s headlamps are meant to evoke the Japanese bullet train, and the van’s side panels have some visually interesting flared surfaces. The lack of colour selection on the base LE is irritating but at least the trio of greyscale paint choices are all zero dollar options.

What We’d Choose

Choosing to spend an extra $1,860 on all-wheel drive seems like a no-brainer, though we still heartily recommend springing for a full set of good-quality winter tires. Making the several thousand dollar walk to the next-rung XLE trim is less clear cut, unless one is hell bent on features like a moonroof and quad-zone climate control. However, there is a case to be made that the Softex (read: fake leather) seats in the XLE are easier to clean, no small consideration when families are involved.

2022 Toyota Sienna

Still, that $3,000 price difference can buy an awful lot of wipes and a really good wet/dry vacuum. Since minivans are the most practical things on the road, it only makes sense to be prudent with one’s purchasing decision as well. We’ll stick with the LE trim – though the selection of all-wheel drive is up to you.

Racing Roundup: Was everybody in F1 told to behave?

Most Mondays when wheels.ca posts this column – I write it and email it in Sunday night – and there’s been a Formula One race, I usually find something to complain about.

The race was dull; the stewards are stupid; Mercedes is killing interest by winning all the time. And so-on. If all else fails, there is always scandal. As my friend Gerald Donaldson says, F1 is “the world’s fastest soap opera.”

But not this Monday. There was a Grand Prix this weekend that was just about perfect. The U.S. Grand Prix was held at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Tex., and it had everything.

By that, I mean it was a great race featuring excitement and drama. There was an enormous crowd. There was plenty of good ol’ American pizzazz, featuring the University of Texas Longhorns marching band and the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. There was breakout recording artist Joshua Ray Walker doing the U.S. national anthem. All that was missing was Michael Buffer letting loose with his “Are you ready to RUUUMMMBBBBLE” trademark combat introduction.

I am not a fan of Martin Brundle, but the snobs who ignored him during his walkthrough should all be made to apologize to him. Somebody tell Serena Williams she’s a has-been. And that rapper, who actually was charming, had a bodyguard who should be arrested for threatening. You know, the one with the green hair. That guy.

The race itself was far from a parade. Max miscalculated his start, figuring he would have a pretty clear run from pole into the first corner, and had to run in second place for much of the race. Toronto driver Nicholas Latifi, starting 13th in his Willams, encountered a backup at that first corner and went high around the outside, only to find fellow Canadian Lance Stroll from Montreal bogged down in his Aston Martin. WHAM! Both were able to continue, although Latifi had to stop for a new nose. But both finished well back in the results.

Max made his second pit stop – it was blisteringly hot, underneath the Texas sun, making it hard on the rubber – three laps in advance of Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion. This gave the Sky announcing crew the rest of the race to debate whether Max had stopped too early and then to count down the tenths as Hamilton ran down the leader.

It’s funny how, in life and sport, things frequently don’t happen the way they’re supposed to. According to Sky, Hamilton would catch Verstappen with two laps to go, pull within a second on the last lap, which would give him DRS, and he would then fly by to win the race at the checkers.

But hold on: here’s Mitch Schumacher (and where did he come from)? He took his time getting out of the way and, when he finally did, he’d mucked things up for at least half a lap. And then, (yes, I am repeating “and then”) when he let Max past, that gave Max DRS, which was the little bit of an advantage he needed to keep Lewis at Bay.

Great stuff.

F1 Notes (a few, anyway): It was Red Bull Racing’s 200th podium in the big league. Max’s teammate, Sergio (Checo) Perez finished third.

Was everyone in F1 on their best behaviour? F1 is making big strides in the United States and its almost as if F1 organizers read the riot act in advance that if anyone stepped out of line they’d be in big trouble. I mean, can you hear the hoots of derision from one coast to the other and north to the Canadian border if the stewards somehow got involved? F1 has probably taken over, or is taking over, from IndyCar so far as popularity is concerned and their growth will come from NASCAR so the stewards will just have to keep their noses out of things whenever F1 is in Austin or, as of 2022, Miami.

The race day crowd was estimated at 140,000. If F1 goes to Indy, they will attract 200,000. Something to think about.

Danica Patrick did a good job pontificating – better than she’s done at either Indianapolis or Daytona since she retired . . . .

This is how you can tell Formula One is catching on in the States. Not since the days of Watkins Glen has anybody seen as big a crowd as was at Austin. The first time I was there, in 2017, the grandstands opposite the Paddock Club, where I was forced to spend the weekend, were just about empty during qualifying. Not this year; they were jammed. And you couldn’t move in the place on Sunday this year. In fact, the roomiest place at Circuit of the Americas was the paddock itself . . . .

The league now will go to Mexico for the next race and Max now holds a 12-point cushion. After Mexico, there will be four races remaining but if Brazil is cancelled because of COVID, that will leave three. One will be the new race in Saudi Arabia. Will any of the drivers have the guts to refuse to race there? How can they hold their “We Race as One” ceremony in Saudi Arabia, where they don’t just throw political prisoners in jail, they skin them alive?

Et tu, Lewis?

OTHER RACING

Kyle Larson won the NASCAR Cup race at Kansas Sunday, with Chase Elliott second. Click here for a full report

Ty Gibbs pulled a Mario Andretti Saturday. He won the Xfinity Series race at Kansas Saturday afternoon (Austin Cindric finished second and A.J. Allmendinger was third) and then he won the 2021 ARCA Menards Series championship by taking the green flag for that evening’s Reese’s 150. Mario, of course, is famous for winning three races in a day: he won a feature early in the afternoon that had been interrupted by rain previously, then he won that afternoon’s feature and then towed to another track where he won the feature that night. He was racing midgets at the time . . . .

In an interview Thursday with Canadian reporters, Latifi said he and George Russell continued to be supportive teammates despite George being promoted to the Mercedes A-team, where he will partner Hamilton. I’m not so sure. Supportive teammates help each other. Russell, because he changed his engine, would start at the back of the pack no matter where he qualified. Latifi was hard-pressed, as the clock wound down, to move on to Q2. A supportive teammate would say, “I’m not going anywhere, so why don’t I give Nick a hand? Why don’t we go out for one last run and I’ll give him a tow?” But he didn’t and Nik didn’t get past Q1 . . . .

They held a 250-lap, 100-car enduro Saturday at Flamboro Speedway (see photo, above). Many of the cars were not properly equipped (in my view), which made things insanely dangerous. I hate to centre-out Flamboro, because just about all Ontario speedways are guilty of doing this at one time or another. Motor racing is dangerous, but it shouldn’t be more dangerous than it already is. Dylan Sharpe won the Enduro, followed by Nic Ramsay and Jo Lawrence. Blair Meiklejohn won the Demolition Derby. . . . .

They held the Indy Autonomous Car Challenge at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Saturday and TUM Autonomous Motorsport (a consortium of European universities) won $1 million. Several University of Waterloo students who teamed up with some U.S. universities could only watch as their computerized car turned left early and destroyed itself against the inside retaining wall. This reminds me of my friend Gary Morton and the first time he drove a super-modified at Oswego Speedway. He drove out of Turn 4 into a glaring sun and couldn’t see a thing. Thinking he must be at the first turn and that he should turn left before he went into the first-turn wall, he cranked ‘er left about 25 yards early and ka-boom!  The car was destroyed; Gary lived to crash again . . . .

The Rallye de Charlevoix, a round of the 2021 Canadian Rally Championship, was held at the weekend and won by Marc-Andre Brisebois and Marie-France Desmerais-Trepanier in a Subaru WRX STI. This was the fourth event counting toward the national championship. The next will be held in Ontario Nov. 19 and 20 at the Rally of the Tall Pines. The championship will conclude early in December in British Columbia . . . .

The Eastern Canadian Rally Championship, which ran at the weekend as part of the Rallye de Charlevoix, was won by Jerome Mailloux and Philippe Poirier. They also will run with the nationally registered cars at the Tall Pines rally Nov. 20.
