McLaughlin joins Cindric as 2022 stars

The 2022 racing season is just under way and already two new stars have been born, Scott McLaughlin in IndyCar and Austin Cindric in NASCAR Cup. They follow last year’s wonder child, Kyle Larson, who’s the defending Cup champion. Fat chance somebody other than Lewis Hamilton will win in F1 or else we’d have a real changing of the guard.

Cindric, who won the pole and then the Daytona 500 last weekend followed that this weekend in California with a pole in the Auto Club Speedway 400. But racing is racing, and nothing is certain (unless you’re Hamilton). Starting from the rear of the field, Larson chipped away at the leaders and made adjustments to his car and fought his way to the front. A last-second pass of Daniel Suarez gave him the checkers. Austin Dillon finished second and Ed Jones was third. Suzarez finished fourth and Joey Logano was fifth.

Cindric, winner of last year’s NASCAR Xfinity Series?  Twelfth, but – as my old friend Clyde Booth explained – his Penske Racing team just missed the setup. “If you miss the setup, it makes for a long Sunday afternoon,” Booth told me once.

On the other side of the country, McLaughlin won the pole for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Saturday and then led most race laps Sunday to crush the opposition and win the GP. Defending NTT IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou was second while Will Power finished third. Colton Herta was fourth and Romain Grosjean fifth.

A New Zealand native, McLaughlin caught the eye of Penske when he won the Australian V8 Supercars championship. He took a year in 2021 to stretch his legs but he certainly looks comfortable now.

ANDRETTI’S F1 PLANS

Bruce Martin is a great motorsport reporter and columnist. I’ve known him for years because we have something in common (although he doesn’t know it) but primarily because of his work with National News Speed Sport News and Autoweek. Also, he’s a foodie and I love following his culinary adventures on his Twitter account.

A week or so ago, Mario Andretti Tweeted out that his son Michael had made application to the FIA to enter a team in Formula One racing in 2024. There was a reaction, but perhaps not the one most motorsport fans expected. Like, how did he really expect to do it?

Formula One is the most technical of big-league sports and the people involved are man-eaters. In fact, you could call them members of the Piranha Club. This expression comes from a book written by Timothy Collings that illustrates how nasty the environment can be: in short, it’s more of a war that a sport. Watch Mercedes’ Toro Wolff and Red Bull’s Christian Horner the next time they interact, if you don’t believe me.

Now, once Mario spilled the beans, the reaction from F1 was swift: they didn’t want a Michael Andretti team on the grid. THE FIA let it be known it was supportive but not Wolff and some of the others. And if Michael and his partners want to meet their deadline, they have a month to get things going.

This is where Bruce Martin comes in. He sat down just before the St. Pete IndyCar weekend and had a long talk with Michael Andretti. What follows is much of what he said:

Michael said he thinks an American team (Andretti Global) and driver (Colton Herta) would go a long way to making F1 more popular in the United States.

He doesn’t think the FIA will be a problem, but the Formula One Constructors Association would have to allow them into the club. Andretti said the teams don’t have a veto as they did under the Concorde Agreement, but Andretti thinks Liberty Media, owners of F1, would want everybody to be happy.

Martin reported that Andretti is currently creating a group of investors to raise $200-million and that time is running out. “Two years sounds like a long time, but it isn’t,” he said. “We’re got a lot to do, a lot to build. We’ve talked to a lot of people. They’re just sitting on the sideline, waiting to see this thing go (which might be a bit of a problem, considering what’s happening in the world today).

Andretti

He wouldn’t identify the investors, other than to say they were an impressible group. “They’re not in it just to be in it. They’re in it sports already and think F1 is a very attractive proposition.

But “first, we have to get approval,” Michael Andretti told Martin. “It’s a big, big undertaking. You have to hire 500 people.”

Andretti would build a new racing facility in Indianapolis but told Martin the initial car would have to be farmed out to an existing F1 team with the engineers based in England and the car constructed in Switzerland. In other words, as was the case a year ago, Andretti would continue to be in bed with Sauber.

NEWS ‘N NOTES

NASCAR says it plans to redevelop the Auto Club Speedway and turn it into a short track. They’d better get cracking. The Auto Club Speedway was half empty Sunday. . . . St. Petersburg drew a huge crowd. . . . James Hinchliffe made his debut as a colour commentator and did a fine job. His style is more boardroom than Paul Tracy’s barroom, in that the Oakville native will be sure to to the company line while Tracy’s comments were often unfiltered. . . . Best line of all the racing telecasts this weekend, however, came from Hinchcliffe who recalled once being told by an engineer to, “Save fuel, save tires but pick up the pace.” . . . . Canadians: Devlin DeFrancesco, Toronto, 22nd – but the last car on the lead lap; Dalton Kellett, Stouffville, 25th – but this was because of mechanical problems. Kellett had turned heads during qualifying Saturday, just missing the fast 12. . . .

What’s your favourite Batmobile?

As a wealthy undercover crimefighter, Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman, has his choice of inventive ways to get around Gotham City. There’s the Batplane, Batcopter and its cousin, the Whirly-Bat. The LEGO Batman even had a Segway to save wear and tear on his battle-weary legs and knees.

As cool as all those vehicles are, they pale in comparison to the Dark Knight’s main ride, the Batmobile.

Unlike the tricked-out cars the crimefighter has driven in movies and on TV, the first Batmobile – seen in the May 1939 issue of Detective Comics No. 27 – was a no-frills red coupe. Dubbed the Batmobile in 1941, the design has evolved over the years, but always reflected Batman’s personality.

Bob Greenberger, writer and editor of more than 100 books and anthologies – many within the DC and Marvel comic universes – said Batman’s car must be a “role model vehicle for a role model hero.”

On March 4, when the character returns to theatres in “The Batman,” fans can count on seeing Robert Pattinson, who takes over the role from Ben Affleck, in a new Batsuit featuring nifty gadgets. They can also expect a new Batmobile.

The latest version reflects the gritty vision of director Matt Reeves’s film. Unlike the futuristic designs of recent Batmobiles, this vehicle is a muscle car, inspired by the Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. It will also feature wider fenders, a battering ram, and, in a nod to Batmobiles of the past, a jet propulsion system that shoots flames. The dark design is said to reflect the brooding personality of Pattinson’s Batman.

With so many Batmobiles to choose from over the decades, we asked several Batman experts to choose their favourite version of the vehicle.

George Barris’ Batmobile

Greenberger chose the classic 1966 Batmobile. Equipped with all the latest crime-fighting gadgets, it was featured in the live action TV show, which aired from 1966 and 1968, and a film adaptation.

“Imagine seven-year-old me seeing the George Barris-designed vehicle screeching out of the Batcave on Jan. 12, 1966,” said Greenberger. “I was astonished and instantly fell in love. It was sleek, fast and had all sorts of gadgets, as witnessed in the very first episodes.

“It was a real car, that was obvious, but it was unlike any car I had ever seen back then,” he said. “It had rockets, a bat-beam, parachutes, a phone, more. It needed atomic batteries and a nuclear charging station, which seemed amazing to my young mind.”

Batmobile

Londyn Jackson, from the website History of the Batman, said this Batmobile represented Batman’s leap into popular culture. “Before the series in the early 1960s, Batman comics sales were declining, almost threatening to make the Dark Knight more obscure within DC Comics, which seems unfathomable in retrospect today,” said Jackson.

“George Barris’ car truly brought this common piece of Caped Crusader’s comic book iconography to life and, more importantly, into households around the globe. Adam West’s Batmobile, with all its bat features and emblems, was just as colourfully fascinating as the Pop Art era of the time, which makes it one of the most perfect Batmobiles to hit the big screen.”

The 1989 Batmobile

Pedro Vargas-Zamora, known on social media as @BatmanCanada, said the 1989 Batmobile from the movies “Batman” and “Batman Returns” is his favourite. This is the car Batman used to rescue Vicki Vale from the clutches of the Joker. It’s one of Batman’s crime fighting tools that prompted the Joker to ask, “Where does he get those wonderful toys?”

“It screams Batman all over,” said Vargas-Zamora. “It’s one of those vehicles where it doesn’t matter if you only get to see a corner, the front or the rear, you will recognize it right away. It also integrates that elegant, sophisticated-yet-intimidating look to the body’s lines. The accents used are full of aircraft-like parts, such as the jet turbine engine, the exhaust after-burner and the instrumentation of the cockpit, giving the car that ahead-of-its-time look that I enjoy so much.

Batmobile

“It captures the very meaning of what Batman means to me: preparation, resourcefulness, adaptation and resilience.”

The Tumbler Batmobile

Mark Askwith, writer, producer and creator of the “Prisoners of Gravity” TV series, said choosing a favourite Batmobile is like asking, “What’s your favourite Elvis Costello song? You’re going have 40 of them.” He settled on the off-road tank tumbler from “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight.”

“The reason I like it so much is that it’s a great military design,” he said. “It makes sense in terms of those first two Christopher Nolan Batman movies. I love that it suits that character. The key to the Batmobile is that each Batmobile fits the personality of the Bruce Wayne (and) Batman. The tumbler is for the grimmer, more serious, more realistic Batman. If you are going to be Batman in a Gotham City that was going toxic, what that Batmobiles says is, ‘This is a very grim world. This is a very grim Gotham.’”

Wins, points don’t matter to Canadian F1 racer Stroll 

Canadian Formula One ace Lance Stroll of Montreal finished 13th in the 2021 world championship and scored 34 points to his teammate Sebastien Vettel’s 43, but insists he doesn’t care about either points or victories going into the 2022 season.

In a wide-ranging interview with the Star and other media recently, Stroll – whose father owns the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant F1 team – said it’s too early to set objectives.

“In 2020, we had a car that could fight for podiums and occasionally a win. Top fives, top threes, occasionally leading races and Sergio (Perez) did win a race.

“Last year, we were fighting for points-scoring positions, eighth, ninth, 10th so it’s a very relative position. You have to get the most out of the package you can. As a team, that’s what we focus on every year. As a team, we have to be very united and focus on every little detail we can to improve this car. It will be such a big learning curve to test and there will be so much to understand and learn and try.”

Last year Vettel outqualified Stroll 12 times and the Canadian scored 34 points while to his teammate’s 43 points.  Stroll’s best result was sixth in Qatar, but he also finished seventh in Italy, took eighth in Imola, Monaco, Austria and Britain and ninth in turkey.

He’s a comer.

Asked if he would consider signing with Ferrari or Red Bull — both of which have contracts coming due at the end of the season – he had a flat-out no.

“We have some great things happening at Aston Martin, primarily the new team principal, Mike Krack. The previous principal, Otmar Szafnauer, moved to Alpine.

“Its very great to have Mike on board,” Stroll said. “I met him today for the first time but his CV, his history, he’s a great addition to the team and I’m very excited to work alongside him. I think he can really help us reach some of our goals.”

As any F1 fan knows, the big technological change this year is the size of the tires. Last year, for instance, the 13-inch tires that were used meant less rubber on the road and the new 18-year-inch tires mean more. He was asked whether he noticed the difference.

“They behave differently,” he said.

Aston Martin

“We tried them on the old car at the end of last season, which was a completely different car than this year’s car. And I think there’s going to be a lot of difference with the new car and these tires. But the car behaved well, was more robust, there was less degradation, better wear rate and so-on.

“But it has its challenges. It’s a much bigger tire so the surface area on the ground is more, there’s more contact patch of the tire on the ground and when the tire does give up, it seems to go into more of a slide, which is harder to catch where, with the 13-inch, it was easier to catch small  snaps but with this tire, which has a bigger contact patch, seems to give you a lot of grip but when it does go it doesn’t give you much warning.

“The tire is bigger and hard to see around. I’m glad I’m in my sixth season and memorized a lot of the corners because if I was in my first season it wouldn’t be easy.”

What can you do to be more consistent and what can the team do to make the car more consistent?

“Experience is always a great thing, and the more you’re out there the more you build on your

strengths. I need to work harder on my craft and get more out of myself. Learning more and more

about that every year and having a better understanding of the things to find speed is very important. As

a team we’re going to grow, with time, there are some very talented people who are very excited about

this project. And we see a lot of people joining the team that are new to the team and haven’t had a

chance to make an impact yet. The new factory, our new partners who have joined us, who are giving us

all the tools to grow as a team and hopefully to really fight at the front and challenge for race wins and

championships and that’s the goal.

“It’s an exciting time in Formula One.”

Stroll shot a hole-in-one during the off-season and enjoyed some good razzing.

“How was your off-season” he was asked. “It’s not every day that you get a hole-in-one. Are you planning to join the PGA tour?”

“Now, no, no, that was definitely the highlight of my golf career. It all went downhill from there. I didn’t have much to brag about other than the hole in one. I was out west in B.C. skiing with some friends for a few weeks (he lives in Switzerland and is still single) and managed to squeeze in a golf trip there too.

“Everything you need to recharge the batteries.”

A salty balance

One of the most harmful things about winter is the white stuff that covers our roads and sidewalks. We’re not talking about snow, but rather the road salt that is used whenever snow falls on our roads.

Each year the City of Toronto lays down up to 150,000 tonnes of salt on its approximately 5,100 kilometres of roads. It’s used to control snow and ice so that driving, walking and getting around in general can be safer.

Salt is popular with municipalities and contractors because it’s cheap and easy to distribute. But, where road salt is concerned, there is plenty to worry about. One problem is that it doesn’t always work. Salt is used to lower the freezing point of water to make it harder for ice to form, but it only works when temperatures are above -7 C. When temperatures fall below that, the city applies brine – a salt and water mixture – ahead of the snowfall, in order to restrict the ability of water and snow on roads to freeze.

Road salt is also harmful to the environment. In 2001, Environment Canada published the results of a five-year assessment on the impacts of road salts, noting it had an adverse effect on freshwater ecosystems, soil, vegetation and wildlife. In March 2021, the University of Toronto published the results of a study that looked at the impact of road salt on aquatic habitat in the city’s rivers. It found that salt run-off in the spring was causing negative impacts well into the summer.

“Of the samples we took from four GTA rivers and creeks during the summer, we found that nearly 90 per cent exceeded federal guidelines for long-term exposure of aquatic life to chloride,” said Donald Jackson, a professor of aquatic ecology in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology.

Similar findings across the southern Great Lakes have been found by WWF Canada. Its studies have revealed that many urban and rural waterways in southern Ontario are showing record high chloride levels. Some are even as salty as the ocean in the winter, according to WWF’s data.

“Ontario is over-salting its parking lots, sidewalks and roadways,” said Elizabeth Hendriks, vice-president of freshwater with WWF Canada. “A small pill bottle or saltshaker is all that’s needed to melt the equivalent of a city sidewalk slab.”

Beyond environmental issues, road salt is corrosive and can damage vehicles, stains shoes and clothing, and can damage lawns during the spring melt.

The drawbacks of road salt are compelling municipalities and contractors to find ways to minimize its use. Some municipalities are also experimenting with alternative products to see if salt can be replaced altogether. In 2016, the City of Toronto produced a Salt Management Plan, which included a list of ways the use of salt can be reduced. Examples include improved training of operators and fitting more trucks with anti-icing and pre-wetting equipment.

In an email, Hakeem Muhammad, transportation spokesperson for the city, said road salt continues to be the best and most effective way to keep roads safe in winter weather. However, the city is aware its use is associated with negative environment impacts. City staff work to reduce those impacts as much as possible by actively managing salt use, Muhammad said, adding it aims for a 10 to 15 per cent reduction by pre-wetting the salt so less is required.

“Salt spreaders are calibrated at the beginning of each winter season and operators are being continuously trained,” Muhammad said. “New equipment will be purchased as part of the new winter services contracts starting in the fall of 2022, which will be more efficient in their salt usage.”

For private contractors, best practices for salt management can be learned through Smart About Salt, a not-for-profit agency. Its online training and certification programs provide advice on how to minimize the use of salt to save money and help the environment at the same time.

Alternatives to road salt exist and continue to be explored. The Sustainable Technologies Evaluation Program – a collaboration between the Credit Valley, Lake Simcoe region and Toronto region conservation authorities — has conducted research on various alternatives. These can be broken down into three categories: chloride de-icers, acetate de-icers, and agricultural byproducts (organics). The research concluded that all the alternatives have drawbacks, including higher prices, specific application requirements, lack of effectiveness and associated environmental issues.

A 2014 study by the University of Waterloo, in partnership with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, looked at organic and semi-organic alternatives. The study determined that organic anti-icers had lower chloride and sodium levels, but contained higher levels of nutrients and organic carbon. When temperatures drop below -20 C, Toronto spreaders use a de-icer made from a mixture of sugar beet molasses and (much less) salt. In Wisconsin, the salty brine from making mozzarella cheese has been used for several years and has had positive effects.

Another alternative are traction agents. Sand is often used this way in rural areas where salt isn’t effective. There are also organic traction agents, such as EcoTraction, a product derived from volcanic rock. It can be used on its own by homeowners or mixed in with de-icers and spread on roads or parking lots by municipalities and contractors.

Fast lines

To some people, cars, hot rods, trucks and motorcycles are things of beauty. To Ron Gibbs, Rollie Guertin and Dan (Danno) Drouin, they are canvasses for creating art.

All three specialize in pinstriping: a method of drawing thin lines into various designs on a hard surface using a fine brush that is made from Russian squirrel hair, which has the right consistency and can drag paint to form a long line. It is precision work. You need a steady hand and an imagination.

There are only about 20 individuals in Canada doing this type of work, and only a handful in Ontario.

Gibbs, who lives in Burlington, is the most experienced and famous of the three artists. The 66-year-old is considered a “triple threat” in the world of custom artwork because he can do pinstriping, air brushing and graphics, and is one of the few in the world adept at all three.

Pinestrips

In 2018, he became the first Canadian to receive the Prestigious Painter Award at the annual Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show. He is also the only Canadian among a group of 12 airbrush artists and custom painters from around the world who call themselves the Air Affair Group. The group was invited by an automotive spraying company to participate in a weeklong series of demonstrations and classes in Salt Lake City, Utah, where some of the members’ work also hangs in a gallery.

Gibbs has been dubbed the “Canadian Rat Fink” as an homage to the late Ed (Big Daddy) Roth, who was one of the originators of pinstriping and custom car designing. Roth created the hot rod cartoon character Rat Fink, who became a commercial success and was the subject of a documentary by Toronto filmmaker Ron Mann. Roth’s widow has given Gibbs permission to use the moniker.

Gibbs grew up loving art and custom cars and vans. After graduating from a Burlington high school that had an art program, he worked at Ford Motor Company for a year to earn enough money to buy a van that he custom designed. He became so good at it and others took notice. It evolved into a career.

Pinstrips

“I consider myself a custom painter, not just a pinstriper or an air brusher because it combines all of them,” Gibbs said. “I learned it from the start and dove right into it. I just used my artistic background and I had to read up on everything because there wasn’t anyone teaching you.”

Eventually, Ford asked him to do three designs to hype its new Focus cars that were being unveiled at auto shows in 2001. One of the shows was SEMA, where Gibbs was able to meet some of the giants in the custom design world. Since then, he has appeared on numerous TV shows, is booked regularly for automotive shows and his work has appeared on numerous magazine covers.

He has expanded his talents to do illustrations, – including automobiles and other objects – which he turns into prints.

“You are one of the best around at what you do, and there’s a lot of hoopla around that, but you still have to make money every day and every week,” Gibbs said. “You have to grind it out sometimes. There isn’t the volume of work. You do one a day or two a day. I’m fortunate I do air brushing, pinstriping and custom painting.

“It can be very, very good, but you aren’t doing that 24 hours a day. If you have prints online, those things are happening 24 hours a day. There’s other opportunities as I get older that I want to explore that will supplement all of that stuff.”

Guertin and Drouin

A resident of Guelph, 67-year-old Guertin has been doing pinstripe artistry on and off for 46 years. He is the only one of the three who didn’t pursue a career as an artist. Instead, he completed a museum technology degree at Algonquin College in Ottawa and moved to Milton in 1976 to work at the Ontario Agriculture Museum.

Before the museum’s sign painter left to work at the University of Guelph, Guertin asked him specific questions about paints, thinners and brushes. Guertin then began doing the sign work for the museum for four years. He learned to do pinstriping and combined that with his passion for cars to do it full time.

“What I like about it, and what I tell people, is I get to work on million-dollar cars and 90 per cent of the time it’s the finishing touch. It’s what they needed,”’ Guertin said, who is known for his work with collectible vehicles. “I’ve striped antique cars for people that had the car for 30 years and said they wouldn’t believe it made that much difference. It really finishes a car off.

Pinstrips

“I can pinstripe forever. I’d be happy at that. I dread the day I get the shakes, or my eyes go or something and I can’t do it anymore. I just love doing it. It’s always something different. Every day is different. I worked on a car that sold last year at auction for $1.6 million. Not a lot of pinstripers can say they’ve ever striped a Duesenberg. I’ve done five or six of them now.”

Drouin, a 53-year-old from Brantford, is a late entrant into pinstriping, with less than 15 years of experience. “I’m not an artist, I’m not a pinstriper, I’m a sign painter,” he said.

He loved art growing up and when a high school teacher asked him if he wanted to make some money sign painting during Christmas, he took the job and his interest snowballed. After graduating from the graphic design program at Mohawk College, he pursued a career in hand painting and later became interested in pinstriping.

That interest peaked some 13 years ago when friends invited him to go to a car show where there were various pinstripers. He met Guertin, who also happened to be a sign painter, and they became good friends. That’s when Drouin decided he wanted to make a living doing both and giving up a career in computer graphics.

“I really wasn’t aware of that stuff because I wasn’t a car guy,” he said. “I was just doing something on my own because I thought it was cool and fun to do. I didn’t really think I was going to do it on cars because I was just painting on panels, just making artwork to hang on the wall.

“Once I found out there was this custom car culture going on, I just got really passionate again,” Drouin said.

EV Advice

Calculating fuel cost savings for an EV is not always easy. Toronto Hydro predicts the annual savings from driving an electric vehicle over a gas one at between $1,000 and $2,500 per year. But perhaps the best way to estimate savings is to go to the federal government’s fuel consumption ratings site (fcr-ccc.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca) where you can search and compare the annual cost for fuelling vehicles from as far back as 1995. It also allows you to personalize the results by inputting how many kilometres you drive, the percentage of city driving, fuel prices and electricity prices.

I tried this by comparing our older Pontiac Vibe hatchback with our Ford C-Max Energi’s annual fuel use, and then threw in the all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD crossover I was test driving at the time. The site defaults gas to $1 per litre and 20,000 kilometres for its annual fuel cost, which resulted in estimates for the Vibe at $1,740 per year, versus the Ford plug-in hybrid at $995 and the larger Hyundai pure EV at $639.

Don’t take the default results too seriously as it underestimates the cost of gas, and overestimates the cost of charging, which most EV owners do during off-peak hours. The Vibe came out to $2,610 per year versus $383 for the Hyundai electric crossover to travel the same 20,000 kilometres, for a savings of $2,227.

It didn’t provide an estimate for our C-Max Energi. Given gas costs about 50 per more than the default setting, and higher winter consumption of both fuels, I’d estimate at least $1,900 for combined gas and electricity use.

Saving more than $2,000 a year is significant, and that extra money in your pocket every month is likely still an underestimation since even brand-new vehicles have a tough time achieving their official consumption numbers at the pump.

Keeping their grip

Driving gloves may signal style and sophistication today, but the origin story of this sporty accessory is hardly a glamorous one. They were born out of function over fashion at the turn of the last century, when drivers wore bulky leather gauntlets designed to keep their fingertips from going numb in buggies that often didn’t even have rooves, let alone heating.
Today, people wear driving gloves for one of three reasons: comfort, precision steering or just to look cool.
“I really can’t think of any practical reason for the regular commuter in a modern car to wear gloves,” said Phil Downe, founder of the Yorkville Exotic Car Show.
“Steering wheels are commonly heated these days. There’s no need for the additional grip because wheels are typically covered in leather or some other non-slip kind of polymer. You really don’t need gloves for day-to-day driving.”
And yet the driving glove remains a final flourish for some drivers just the same. They are both popular brand extenders for companies such as Porsche, BMW and Ferrari. They are also an inspiration for artists on Etsy, who stitch their own creations inspired by retro designs. Dorothy Gaspar, who designed the bareknuckle brown leather glove worn by Ryan Gosling’s stunt driver in the 2011 crime drama “Drive,” says she’s sold thousands through her brand, Gaspar Gloves, since the film was released.

Driving Gloves
“I have hundreds and hundreds of customers each year,” she said. “We sell it for Father’s Day, we have parents buying it for their sons’ birthdays. It’s still the No. 1 seller on our website.” Her driving gloves have also been worn by Lady Gaga, Madonna and Rihanna – not while driving, but to complete an ensemble.
Downe wears driving gloves at the track, where he can frequently be found as a high-performance driving instructor for The Porsche Clubs of America and for The BMW Trillium Club.
“As soon as you get significantly above highway speeds, every student turns into a white-knuckle driver,” he said. “You have to have a light touch with the steering wheel, just like a pilot does on a yoke or a stick. In order to have the confidence of that light grip, it helps to wear a driving glove.”
He also wears a driving glove when he takes his 1930 Chrysler out for a spin. “The steering mechanisms of the time were very rudimentary,” he said. “There was no power steering, there was no hydraulic-assisted steering, steer by wire. It was all unassisted and you really had to grip the crap out of that wheel.”
Jeff Stork, an auto writer whose book “Glamour Road: Colour, Fashion, Style, and the Midcentury Automobile” will be published in March, agrees that he wouldn’t slip into a pair of driving gloves unless the car called for it.
“I’ll take gloves on a driving tour, and I tend to use them on an older car with a wooden steering wheel,” he said. “I don’t use them on my modern cars because I don’t really like the feel of the leather glove on the leather steering wheel.”
But in much the same way nostalgia inspires our affection for vintage-style driving gloves, you never know when a passe automobile design feature will come roaring back into style. “A lot of the high-end cars today are back to having a wood steering wheel,” Stork said. “And that’s where leather gloves give you a perfect grip.”

Driving Gloves

Why is it called a glove box?

Our passenger-side compartment may forever be known as the glove box, but the name really commemorates a piece of automobile culture that was already in decline when the storage bin was christened. The glove box was first introduced in the early 20th century but didn’t really become standard until the 1930s. By then, the use of gloves was already in decline as cars adopted heating and better insulated designs. “It really just became for storage,” auto writer Jeff Stork said. “I don’t think it was ever really very much about gloves. The glove box is really for the registration.”

Once-tiny racer to make his first start in IndyCar big league

Years ago, in 2012 or so, I did an interview with a young Ontario karter named Devlin DeFrancesco, for which big things were expected. I talked to a lot of kid racers back in the day – Lance Stroll, Robert Wickens and Daniel Morad among them – and it was always fun to ask them about their ambitions.

Stroll, of course, said he intended to be a Formula One driver. He was actually on his way by age 12. His father, Lawrence Stroll, had invested $25 million in the Ferrari Driver Academy, where Lance was already enrolled. The family had moved from Montreal to Switzerland to be near the school. So Lance knew where he was going.

Wickens won everything in sight – he had Red Bull sponsorship – but when it came time to move up to F1, there was always somebody ahead of him in line who had serious money (Wickens didn’t have that much). The following year, Morad won the Formula BMW North America championship, as Wickens had before him, and went to Austria to collect his prize.  Helmut Marko, Red Bull driver development director, took one look at him and said: “Get out of here! I don’t need another Canadian.”

All those guys – and others – wanted to make it to F1. But when I asked DeFrancesco in that first interview, he surprised me by saying he wanted to be a NASCAR driver. Why, I asked? “Because there are more races and you get to have that much more fun,” he said. His father, Andy, was standing beside him when he said that and slowly shook his head.

“We’ll see about that,” he said.

Dad was right – then and now but maybe not forever. Devlin DeFrancesco will launch his IndyCar career in St. Petersburg, Fla., next weekend when the NTT-sponsored series kicks off its 17-race championship that will include stops in Toronto (fingers crossed) and the biggest race in the world, the Indianapolis 500.

Now, a reminder: when he was born in 2000, DeFrancesco was 15 weeks premature and barely weighed a pound. His eyes were fused shut. Nobody gave him a chance of living and he was given the Last Rites of the Roman Catholic Church. But he was a fighter and never gave up. Now, he’s five-foot-five and weighs a solid 138 pounds. He drives racing cars (which he’s done since he was six) and when he’s not on the track he’s in the gym working out twice a day, five or six days a week.

DeFrancesco’s living in Miami Beach at the moment (when he was racing in Europe before deciding on an IndyCar career, he split his time between Toronto and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). When he feels like it, he goes cycling around town with Romain Grosjean, a teammate on the Andretti Autosport team that also includes Colton Herta and Alexander Rossi.

DeFrancesco’s Andretti car is co-owned by George Steinbrenner IV of New York Yankees fame.

“I have a huge opportunity in front of me now,” DeFrancesco said in conversation the other day. “I have a great group of people around me, so I’m very excited to get going.

“To go from Indy PRO 2000 to Indy Lights to IndyCar with the same team has been a huge help. After two years, this place feels like home and that will make the transition into the IndyCar so much easier.”

He said Michael Andretti has been in his corner since he signed with the team to drive in Indy PRO 2000 two seasons ago.

“Michael and I have set goals for the season,” DeFrancesco said. “He’s been a massive help. I didn’t have a good year in Indy Lights (last year) but the plan was for me to move into IndyCar this year where the car might be better suited to my style. For instance, the biggest thing you notice is how incredible these cars are on the brakes compared to Indy Lights. I wouldn’t be here if it hadn’t been for Michael Andretti and George Steinbrenner.”

Unlike many on the current IndyCar and F1 roster, DeFrancesco doesn’t have a coach. However, he receives a lot of unofficial help from friends.

“James (Hinchcliffe) has been in my corner and Juan (Pablo) Montoya has done a lot for me over the years. There are not that many drivers who have the adaptability that he has and I hope to pick up some of that.”

Of all the races on the schedule, however, the Indianapolis 500 is the one most drivers look forward to every year. DeFrancesco is no exception.

“That is the race that stands out for me” he said. “The Speedway cars are being prepared already and I’ve been keeping tabs and asking questions: how we’re looking and how things look in the wind tunnel. Indy is the crown jewel – there’s no bigger race in the world – and although I’m looking forward to all the races, St. Pete and going home to race in Toronto for the first time, that’s what I’m looking forward to as well, but definitely it’s the Indy 500.”

And what about Toronto? The race has been cancelled twice because of COVID-19 and although things are opening up in Ontario, there’s still a cap of 500 people attending any sporting event.

“I think the series wants to come back to Toronto,” DeFrancesco said. “Their decision depends on the situation in Canada – what, if anything, is the situation with sports events and how they want to deal with it. To be honest, I think it’s more of a government situation than a series situation.”

Okay. Devlin. Tell me about your plans to go NASCAR racing, as you told me you planned to do all those years ago. When you do a head count, there aren’t more than 100 (or so) jobs in North American big-league auto racing. You’ve got one now, but who knows what will happen in 10 years when you’re 32 and still keen to race.

“I’d be keen to race in NASCAR,” he said. “I think you have to have an open mind about those things. Stock cars, sports cars – it wouldn’t matter. I want to race now and I’d want to race then. If somebody wants me to race for them, I’d be foolish not to at least listen to them.

“But I love IndyCars and I’m really looking forward to the season. We’re talking way in the future, I know that, but I hope I never have to make that decision.”
